Jewellery & Watch News
Whitby is the perfect host! You’ve got to admit, our far from traditional seaside town is the ideal location for an eerie weekend. With its links to Bram Stoker’s Gothic novel, Dracula and the haunting Whitby Abbey ruins that keep a watchful eye, Whitby is the only setting for the famous Goth Weekend. It’s all set to go ahead this Halloween 29th - 31st October 2021 bringing all things that spook to our cobbled streets.
What Is Whitby Goth Weekend?
If you’re new around here, you might not have heard of the famous Goth Weekend that has haunted Whitby since 1994. Every Halloween many visit our North Yorkshire town dressed in dramatic costumes to listen to their favourite musicians and peruse the alternative market. As you can imagine, their spooky attire is far from timid, with many going all out for the festival. The more terrifying the better!
It all started with founder, Jo Hampshire and her group of friends chatting in the pub. The idea soon became reality creating the festival that now takes place twice a year (with a gap in the calendar last year for obvious reasons). An April date was added in 1997 due to its popularity and now we couldn’t imagine Whitby without it.
The love for Gothic culture brings fans from across the globe with many tourists simply enjoying the impressive outfits. You’ll also find that a couple of subcultures - steampunk and Victoriana - have embraced the festival making the event even more accessible. It’s has become so successful that those attending have to book their accommodation two years in advance!
